Alexander Butler has been selected as the next principal for Russell Cave Elementary. With more than 12 years of experience as an educator and leader, Butler has served as assistant principal at William Wells Brown Elementary since 2020. He will begin his new role on July 1.
Butler started his career in 2012, joining Team FCPS as a middle school mathematics teacher at Bryan Station Middle and later Edythe J. Hayes Middle. He also taught math at T.T. Knight Middle School in Jefferson County, where he was appointed athletics director.
"Alexander's dedication to creating a collaborative and inclusive school environment has been outstanding," said Superintendent Demetrus Liggins. "His strategic leadership and commitment to fostering academic excellence for all students make him a great choice to lead Russell Cave Elementary."
Outside of the classroom, Butler has been a strong advocate for FCPS students, serving in various roles for the district including math chair, head football coach, team leader, assistant basketball coach, assistant track coach, step team coach, and assistant football coach. In addition, he served on School-Based Decision Making Councils at Bryan Station and Edythe J. Hayes middle schools. He completed the FCPS Aspiring Principals Program in 2023.
“Alexander has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to student success and teacher development,” said Chief School Leadership Officer Barry Richburg, who oversees Russell Cave Elementary. “His ability to build strong relationships within the school community and his innovative approach to education will greatly benefit Russell Cave.”
Butler holds a bachelor’s degree in Middle Childhood Education from Central State University in Ohio, a master’s degree in Elementary Mathematics from Western Governors University in Utah, and a principal licensure from Western Kentucky University.
